Shine in the Rain

Monsoon girlCome monsoon, and most of us feel that the hitherto, well-behaved skin begins to act strangely. At times the oil glands will go on overdrive and the skin can also feel parched at the same time. Quite contradictory, but that’s the way it is. You also begin to lose your precious strands more and dandruff seems to recur. The beauty bloopers can be handled easily, if you knew the right tricks. My Health Guardian rescues you.

1. Tank up on toners. In order to deal with hyper-active sebaceous glands you need the help of toners. Toners and astringents are different. Astringents are useful in controlling surface oils and lowering skin’s pH, after cleansing. At the same time, they also tighten the open pores of the skin. On the other hand, toners are mainly used for keeping the skin hydrated and providing nourishment to the skin. Astringents should be used with a cotton ball on the T zone, whereas toner should be used with your finger tips, suggests Dr Shehla Aggarwal, Dermatology expert. Rose water is an excellent toner. In fact, whenever you feel that your skin feels greasy, spray a fine mist of rose water on your face.

2. Use water-based moisturisers. Agreed, your skin feels sticky but it’s no excuse to skip the moisturiser. Use a light weight moisturiser with SPF 15 or 20 in it, because there is no way you can ditch the sunscreen. It’s a good idea to rub ice cube on your face before you wear the moisturiser to close the pores.

3. Beat the shine with compact. Remember, in the wet months of monsoon, you need to keep the makeup at the minimum. You don’t want streaks of foundation over your face after getting caught in an unexpected shower. At the same time, there is no need to look like the plain Jane. Use pressed powders (preferably mineral one) on your face to absorb the extra shine.

4. Bring out the mask. Whip a face mask from the ingredients readily available in your kitchen or use a packaged face mask. The choice is entirely yours, but you need to pamper your skin. Multani mitti combined with tomato juice and split-open vitamin E capsule is a wonderful face mask for all skin types.

5. Your hair deserves extra care. Most of us experience increased hair fall during monsoon months. Experts seem to agree on it. The hair getting damp in unexpected showers may be one of the reasons responsible for it. You need to book yourself for a hair spa this season to pamper your precious strands. Taking a biotin supplement for six weeks is a good way to offset nutritional deficiencies. Use a shampoo that is mild and gentle on your hair. Try to shampoo your hair every alternate day. Massage your hair with warm oil twice a week. Keep hair styling gels to a minimum.

In these months you should use a gentle face wash and avoid indulging in zealous over scrubbing of the face. You will strip off the precious oils and your face will respond by secreting a lot more oil. A better way to deal with shine is to splash your face with water and lemon juice. Begin bathing twice a day and spray a few drops of EDT in your bath water for a clean feeling throughout the day.
