Do Real Seniors Take Nutritional Supplements

Indian seniorsMany elderly begin taking supplements to bridge the nutritional deficiencies. And there are many more who contemplate taking a nutritional supplement. Supplements have never been devoid of controversy. There are ‘believers’ and ‘non-believers’. We talk to real seniors on what supplements they take and if they would recommend it to others.

1. Supplement: MultivitaminMega Men 50plus 2
General Vohra takes GNC Megamen 50 Plus for the last two and half years. The supplement was initially bought by his son who lives in USA for him. Since then, he has been hooked to it and visits Galleria store to refill his nutritional needs. GNC Mega Men 50 plus is a premium multivitamin. It has vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that address nutritional needs of senior men.

The need: As we age our body ceases to assimilate nutrients from foods as well as it once did. In addition, the systems of the body begin to slow down. The correct nutrients are more than necessary to support, repair or regenerate cells. Therefore, taking a multivitamin supplement is a good idea, says Dr. Sushila Kataria, Internal Consultant at Medanta-the-Medicity

Will he recommend it? He already has been spreading the good word about GNC Mega Men.

2. Supplement: Saw palmetto Saw Palmetto1
Mr. Vijay Ramchandran has been taking GNC Saw Palmetto for quite some time and he frequents Galleria store at Gurgaon to pick his medicines. At the time of interview, he was at Jakarta and his better half answered questions for us. He started taking saw palmetto at the advice of his doctor and on the strong recommendation of his friends to earn relief from prostate and urinary concerns. The supplement has been immensely helpful in improving his prostate health.
The need: Enlargement of prostate is an extremely common health concern in men more than 40. Dr. Rajesh Taneja, Senior Consultant, Urology at PSRI equates it to graying of hair. Several research studies recommend saw palmetto to alleviate symptoms of enlarged prostate.

Will he recommend it: YES

3. Supplement: Calcium with Vitamin D3 Xtravital Bone Health
N.K. Dewan used to suffer from pain in his bones, especially at the joints. On the advice of the nutritional consultant at one of the Guardian stores, he began to take Guardian Xtravital Bone Health and for the last two years he is regular with the medicine. No need to mention that he has found relief from the pain in his bones.

The need: Dr. Kataria says that almost 50% of Indian population is deficient in calcium and vitamin D3 levels. A calcium supplement in the advancing years does a lot of good to the bones. Bones are active tissues and they respond greatly to exercise like walking. A brisk walk along with a diet rich in calcium, combined with a calcium supplement will keep bones healthy in your later years. If you smoke then quit it, because smoking depletes your bone density, adds she.

Will he recommend it? Yes, he will. He insists that men and women of all ages can benefit from a calcium supplement. The experts agree with him.

4. Supplement: Glucosamine Chondriotin Tri flex
Navin Kishore (though he is not officially a senior) has been taking a calcium supplement for healthy bones for quite some time. A year ago when he developed knee pain his orthopaedic advised him to consider a joint supplement to keep his joints healthy. He started to take GNC Triflex in addition to the calcium supplement he was having. GNC Triflex combines the power of chondroitin, glucosamine, and MSM for healthy joints.

The need: Any kind of knee pain usually results from extra weight, overuse, poor form during physical activity, not warming up or cooling down enough before an intensive regimen of physical activity and osteoarthritis, a condition in which knee cartilage wears down. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are part of normal cartilage. Cartilage acts as a cushion between the bones in a joint. Naturally, glucosamine, also called chitosamine, is found in the covering of shellfish. An insufficient supply of glucosamine restricts the efficiency of cartilage rebuilding and can delay repair of cartilage and other connective tissues. People who are overweight, have osteoarthritis should use glucosamine and chondroitin to relieve joint pain, advises Dr. Kataria.

Will he recommend it: Certainly, he will, because his joint pain has improved considerably after taking GNC Triflex.

5. Supplement: Cranberry GNC Cranberry
Kavita Vasudev was suffering from persistent urinary-tract-infection. She started to take GNC Cranberry Softgel capsules to get rid of the infection.

The need: Urinary tract infection is a quite common infection in women and it causes burning sensation while urination. Older ladies who have gone through menopause are at increased risk of developing this infection, because there is thinning in the lining of the vagina and estrogen level also goes down.

Will she recommend it? She would certainly recommend it, because it helped her immensely.

Since seniors suffer from multiple health concerns, it’s always advisable to seek consent of the expert, before they begin any health supplement on their own, warns Dr. Kataria.
