Cure Cold at Home

coldsRecurrent cough and cold could be due to sudden whether changes and pollution, and are normal and bearable. But sometimes your body has a real tough time warding off the cold viruses which might even lead to acute respiratory illness. Before taking recourse to the medications try out these simple remedies to cure cold the natural way.

This typical condition, in a mild or severe form, doesn’t leave anyone untouched. At times, it can be debilitating and if not treated on time could lead to bad cough, fever and acute respiratory infection. Best if you have simple remedies ready right at home.

First of all, avoid catching cold

  •  Be well clad
  • Try to stay away from people with cold and cough.
  • Avoid going to crowded places as the risk of infection is greater there.
  • Do not touch your nose or eyes after coming in physical contact with somebody that has a cold.
  • Wash your hands properly, especially after blowing your nose.
  • Keep rooms airy.

Normally a common cold does not cause serious condition and symptoms go away in a week or two. But if left untreated it may lead to possible complications like high fever, inflammation of the eyes, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pneumonia. The reason for these complications may be germs infecting the irritated mucous membrane.

  •  One of the best treatments is to drink plenty of water and other non alcoholic-fluids to flush out the toxins from the body. This is especially important for children. Many symptoms clear up by taking warm drinks.
  • Get bundled up and take long hours of rest. When down with cold your immune system gets shaken up you need to take a break from all the stressful activities.
  • Blow Your Nose frequently to avoid sniffling mucus into your head.
  • Keep your head elevated while sleeping. Put an extra pillow under your head to help the drainage of nasal passage.
  • Avoid smoking; it irritates the mucous membrane of the nose further.

Take vitamin C

Having a diet rich in vitamin C or its supplements is good for your body because it helps boost your immunity level.

Gargle

When have a bad throat nothing works better than gargling. Take a teaspoon of salt, dissolve it in warm water and gargle at least three times a day. It helps soothe sore throat.

Take steam

A stuffy nose and chesty cough can be relieved by using steam inhalations as it helps to loosen mucus. Sit with your head over a bowl of hot water, place a towel over your head, close your eyes and breathe deeply to inhale the steam. Ideally, it is not recommended for children because of the risk of scalding, but they may benefit from sitting in a steamy bathroom.

Nebulize

“If you have developed wheezing, finding it difficult to breathe, suffering from allergic bronchitis or other respiratory ailments, use a nebulizer. Nebulization proves very effective in such cases as it clears the airways and the lungs so that breathing becomes easier”, recommends Dr. Sushila Kataria, Internal Consultant, Appollo Clinic. Liquid medicines are placed in a container. The medicine will then turn into a mist once the machine is started. The patient has to inhale the mist through a tube that has a mouthpiece. This method of treatment allows the medicine to enter directly into the lungs of the patient and causes the muscles to open up and allow better breathing. Nebulizers also come in portable sizes for easy transportation.

Wear your turtle neck, get snuggled under the quilt, keep yourself hydrated with warm drinks and amp up your immunity level with Vitamin C supplements to avoid cold.
