MEDICINES WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!

tablets-injectionMy Health Guardian details about two highly awaited medicines that got launched recently in the market. Keep reading to know basic information about them.

1. GENERIC NAME: TERIPARATIDE – INJECTION
Brand Name: FORTEO
Wonder drug for: Osteoporosis
Company: El Lily

Osteoporosis is a bone disorder which makes your bones hollow. Osteoporosis is a disease in which the density and quality of bone are reduced, leading to weakness of the skeleton and increased risk of fracture, particularly of the spine, wrist and hip. Osteoporosis and associated fractures are an important cause of mortality and morbidity.

Teriparatide is used to treat bone loss (osteoporosis) in people who have a high risk of getting fractures. Before Teriparatide injection, medicines for treating osteoporosis worked by arresting bone loss. This is the only medicine that works by building bone mass. It is similar to a natural hormone in your body (parathyroid hormone). It works by increasing bone mass and strength. This effect helps to decrease the risk of getting a fracture.

How the medicine works

  • Increases your body’s ability to help build new bone to fill in the pits created during bone loss, and add a layer of new bone
  • Helps to build new bone not only in your spine, but in other bones like the ankle/foot, hip, arm, pelvis, ribs, and wrist
  • Works similarly to a part of a protein your body produces called parathyroid hormone, or PTH

WARNING: POTENTIAL RISK OF OSTEOSARCOMA

During the drug testing process, the medicine caused some rats to develop a bone cancer called osteosarcoma. In people, osteosarcoma is a serious but rare cancer.

Who should not take Teriparatide injections
You should not take the injections for more than 2 years over your lifetime.
Side Effects:
The medicine can cause serious side effects including a decrease in blood pressure when you change positions. Some people feel dizzy, get a fast heartbeat, or feel faint right after the first few doses. It may increase calcium levels in the blood, which can be accompanied with symptoms as nausea, vomiting, constipation, low energy or muscle weakness.

2. GENERIC NAME: Nicotinic Acid 1.0 G Usp & Laropiprant 20 Mg Modified Release Tablets
Brand Name: TREDAPTIVE™
Wonder Drug for: Dyslipidaemia (Low levels of HDL cholesterol and High levels of LDL cholesterol)
Company: Merck

Who can take the medicine?
The active ingredient of the medicine is Niacin, also known as vitamin B3. It addresses dyslipidemia by increasing HDL – cholesterol and by decreasing LDL – cholesterol and triglycerides. In the renowned Coronary Drug Project, Niacin showed 4% absolute reduction in mortality over a 15 year follow up. Dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol levels) being a lifestyle disease, it can be given for as long as the doctor finds it beneficial for the patient. This would be on the lines similar to Statins which are given lifelong to control the lipid profile of the patients.

The medicine should be taken in the evening or at the bedtime. You should not break, split or crush the medicine before swallowing it and avoid spicy foods and alcohol at the time of the medicine.

Side Effects:
Flushing is the most common side effect, which is most commonly visible in upper torso, face, head and neck.
