Herbal Support for Menopause

nutrition revisedMenopause is a phase of transition in women. Though, menopause happens when periods stop altogether, this doesn’t happen overnight. Before menopause, there is an uncomfortable period of transition, called perimenopause, which results in such symptoms: hot flashes, vaginal dryness, joint pains, fatigue, memory loss, depression and anxiety. You can tide over these symptoms with a little help from your kitchen and herbal cures. Keep reading to know more on this.

Ayurveda recommends that women experiencing menopause should eat bitter foods, which include dark leafy greens. Astringent foods are also good. These foods are beans, soybeans, potatoes, cabbages and poultry foods. The bitter and astringent foods help in reducing the heat in the woman’s body which is produced during menopause. It’s good to avoid sour, salty and pungent foods. Such foods are onions, garlic, mustard and chillies, tomatoes, tamarinds, vinegar and curd.

  • Try boiling few carrot seeds in milk and drink it. It’s helpful during menopause.

  • During this period increase your intake of milk and milk products as calcium begins to leach from your bones. You can even try supplemental calcium.

  • Snack on beetroot in salads or drink it up to manage menopausal symptoms. When boiling beetroot for salads, do it with the skin on and peel it before you chop the veggie for salad.

  • To counter vaginal dryness mix almond oil with geranium oil and apply it around your vaginal portion to keep the area soft and lubricated.

  • Estrogen levels hit south when you undergo menopause. The best way to get estrogen naturally is to go the soya way. Soya foods are also helpful in increasing the amount of estrogen in the body. They regulate the cholesterol level, make bone strong, and improve hot flashes.

  • Ashwagandha or Indian ginseng is often prescribed women to stabilize mood fluctuations in menopausal women.
