Stomach flu

In the hot months of summer, we often find instances of stomach flu. Stomach flu refers to gastroenteritis or irritation and inflammation of the stomach and intestines (the gastrointestinal tract). Gastroenteritis may be caused by a virus, bacteria and parasites in spoiled food or unclean water. Another trigger for stomach flu can be lactose intolerance, which causes a reaction to dairy products.

Stomach flu doesn’t last for very long. However, you can soothe the troubled tummy with the following natural cures—

  1. Stay hydrated, even if it sounds difficult.
  2. Electrolyte solution offers relief.
  3. Sip on homemade lemonade.
  4. Mix a teaspoon of ginger juice, lemon juice each and pepper it with kala namak. Lick the mixture.
  5. Buttermilk with black salt provides relief from an upset tummy.
  6. If you suspect food poisoning have a toast with black tea. Toast is light on stomach and black tea has tannic acid.
  7. Tea made with the infusion of peppermint leaves can placate the rebellious tummy.
  8. Coconut water is a gentle hydrating drink.
  9. Grand ma recommends a drink of thick consistency made with isabgol, water and sugar to arrest the loose motions.
  10. BRAT diet is suitable for people suffering from stomach flu, where—
  • B stands for—Mashed bananas
  • R—Overcooked, soggy rice
  • A—Apple juice (only if you can get it made at home)
  • T—Tea—Mint or ginger tea (Refrain from adding milk)
