Coenzyme Q10

coenzyme2Discovered in 1957, Coenzyme Q 10 has another name ubiquinone, as it is widespread in the human body. Our body uses CoQ 10 to transform food into energy fuel for our body. It acts as a powerful antioxidant and neutralizes evil effects of free radicals. Virtually every cell of the human body contains and manufactures CoQ10. The heart, kidneys and liver contain the greatest amount of CoQ 10.

CoQ 10 is found primarily in fish and meat, other food sources are orange, roasted nuts, boiled eggs, cauliflower, broccoli, strawberries and roasted nuts. Amounts in food are far less than those in supplements.

CoQ 10 tends to decline in body as people age or develop diseases, such as asthma, cardiac diseases and Parkinson’s.

Interest in CoQ10 grew in the early seventies when researchers found that patients with congestive heart failure had much lower levels of it in their hearts. As a corollary to this people with healthy hearts have adequate amounts of this essential nutrient.

CoQ 10 prevents oxidation of LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol’s oxidation may lead to build up of plaque on artery wall, subsequently increasing risk of heart attack.

CoQ 10 reduces resistance to blood flow which may help in managing blood pressure.

Antioxidant properties in CoQ 10 may help in fighting ravages of free radicals and push aging few years away.

CoQ 10 has immune enhancing properties. Tissue and cells involved with immune function are highly energy dependent and therefore require an adequate supply of CoQ 10 for optimal functions.

Researches say CoQ 10 may pose a cure for degenerative diseases like diabetes and Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological disorder characterized by tremors, muscular rigidity and slow movement.

Deficiency may result from poor synthesis in the body rather than an insufficiency in diet.

Caution

  • CoQ 10 supplements may interact with medications.
  • Vitamin E and CoQ 10 go together, lab studies say this.
  • Co Q 10 is fat soluble. Take it with your meals.
