10 Ways to Get Over Craving of Smoking

Nicotine addict shares a  love-hate relationship with his smoke. When Mark Twain wrote, “Quitting is easy, done that a hundred times”, he ehoed the feelings of fellow smokers who desperately wish to quit. Ask a confirmed smoker if he or she enjoys smoking and chances are the answer will be “yes.” Ask the same person if he or she would like to quit. You’ll probably get the same answer— “yes.”

As a tobacco cessation specialist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi I did learn that most smokers are really unhappy to smoke. The majority of the smokers wants to quit the addiction, but cannot because of the addictive nature of nicotine; which is as addictive as cocaine and heroin says Dr Sajeela Maini, a tobacco cessation specialist at Ganga Ram Hospital.

“Craving is a terrible urge that a smoker has to light up. It is advisable to set a quitting date during a vacation, as you are likely to be stress free, which increases your chances of success. Breathing exercises, chewing on fennel seeds, sucking on candies, going for a walk, or even a glass of water do help in subsiding the craving. Cravings happen in waves and subside after some time. But the key to being successful is not to give in.

Whenever craving sensations occur, try distracting your mind. Either go for a ten minute brisk walk, or get up and have a glass of water. You can also chew on fennel seeds. This way the urge will go away.

2. You will have greater success in quitting if you do it along with a friend because this way you can share the ups and downs of your journey with someone who can empathize with you.

3. Seek professional counseling. Quitting becomes more effective if you seek counseling and your success rate increases.

4. There is a method to de-addiction. Use Nicotine-Replacement Therapy, like nicotine gums to become a successful quitter.

5. Do some shopping on products that will help you quit your addiction. There are therapies like Laser, Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy that claim to help you quit forever. Worth trying, because you never know what may work for you?

6. When you are just trying to quit stay away from friends who’re smokers as they can tempt you back in the habit.

7. Drink milk. Some studies say that milk can alter the taste of cigarette and you wouldn’t be able to enjoy your smoke as before.

8. Sign up membership to a gym to get some exercise. Practice meditation to keep yourself motivated enough to quit smoking.

9. Choose a time to quit which is relatively relaxed. If you try quitting in the stressful times you’ll have diminished the chances of success, because you are more likely to light a smoke under stress.

10. Most importantly, if you don’t succeed, do not lose heart and try once again.

Remember, quitting is difficult but you can do it.
