Name any ailment and your doctor recommends drinking plenty of water along with medication. It is that vital for our body.

Water- our lifeline constitutes the major part of our body. Almost 2/3 of our body weight comprises of water. The composition of our body is like – blood is 83% water, muscles are 75% water, brain is 74% water and bone is 22% water. Extremely essential for our survival, it ensures the smooth functioning of body systems but still we ignore its importance by not drinking enough.

It is extremely necessary for the body to digest food and absorb vitamins and minerals. Water carries oxygen to different organs of the body; helps detoxify the liver, kidneys and the entire body by flushing out the toxins. The tremendous healing ability of water is not unknown. Our environment, foods and everything around us… contain traces of harmful chemicals. Though we can’t keep toxins from getting into our body‚ but we can definitely help our body to eliminate them by drinking plenty of clean water. Most of the diseases occur due to the toxins building up in our body. The more water we drink… the more we allow our body to detoxify itself and heal.

Water also helps to lose weight by improving your metabolism rate, and gives you a glowing skin.

You lose lots of water in the course of a day while breathing, through perspiration and through urination. If you are very active, then also you lose more water than if you are sedentary.

“We all think that our body demands more water in summer than in cold wintry months. Not true. Water in the winter is just as important. A drop in the moisture level outdoors and the use of heatiners indoors leads to dry and itchy skin, chapped lips, dry coughs, acne, or even headaches. So always keep water handy by keeping a bottle by your side, since it needs to be replenished every now and then”, advises Dr. Arpit Jain, Internal Medicine, Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon.

Not drinking enough water might lead to dehydration, thereby hindering blood circulation in the body. Due to inadequate water, even the brain becomes less active and body feels drained and exhausted. You could even end up with excess body fat, poor muscle tone, indigestion, muscle tenderness and water-retention problems.

Drink on an average at least eight glasses of water everyday, though lot depends upon one’s health condition, activity status etc. Do not drink the whole amount in one go but spread its intake throughout the day. We all think that drinking too much water keeps will keep us running to the bathroom. It’s true. But in a few days time our bladder tends to adjust and we urinate less frequently but in larger amounts.

Have it in the form of warm lemon water as a perfect morning drink, it assists the digestive system, makes the process of eliminating the waste products from the body easier and contributes to weight loss.
