Mend Monsoon Maladies with Home Remedies

monsoon rainCome monsoon and viral fever, allergies, asthma, dandruff begin to affect us. However, there is a lot you can do at home to mend these monsoon maladies. My Health Guardian gets in touch with Dr. Preeti Chabbara, Ayurveda expert at Gangaram Hospital to know more about the home remedies.

Common Cold

From the sniffles and sneezes to a sore throat and annoying cough, the common cold usually catches up with us in one way or other during this weather. The following recipes can keep your cold at bay.

• Black pepper (kali mirchi) is readily available in your kitchen. One to two grams of black pepper powder can be mixed with honey, which will be a good option for you to manage common cold.
• If fever accompanies common cold, adults can take a decoction of 2-3 gram ginger, black pepper, long pepper, liquorice (mulethi) in equal quantity and seven tulsi leaves 2-3 times a day.
• Get some turmeric fried and have this with hot water or honey. You will get relief.
• Chewing of two to three cloves (laung) fried in ghee will help you.
• Half a gram of powder of long pepper mixed with rock salt can also be taken twice daily with hot water.

Sore Throat

A sore throat usually accompanies a cold and cough either as a result of tonsils being swollen or an infection and irritation in the throat, which can also lead to ear-ache.

• Boil some spinach leaves in water and gargle with hot spinach water. This is a good remedy for sore throat.
• Gargle at least once each hour with 1tsp (5g) of salt dissolved in one glass of warm water.
• You can also gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day. This will be effective for you.

Dandruff Solution

Monsoon is the high time for dandruff.  Keep it at bay with these home remedies.

• Rub sour curd with salt into the hair and wash after 15-20 minutes. The dandruff will say bye bye to your precious locks.
• Boil beetroot leaves in water and wash the hair with it to kill lice and get rid of dandruff.

• Make a paste of poppy (khuskhus) seeds with milk; apply it to the hair root, wash off with water after half an hour. Mild shampoo may be used there after. Do it twice a week.

Boost Immunity

You must have heard the word immunity from your doctor a lot, but what does it mean? It’s the protection of your body from diseases and infections. Boost your immunity with these home remedies.
• Regular use of basil leaves will enhance your immunity.
• Green tea is loaded with antioxidants, which has the ability to reduce growth of cancer cells.
• Take an adequate amount of  black berries. The berries are rich in antioxidants.
