Detoxify Your Liver

With Chrismas and New Year revelries approaching nearer, now is the time to spare a thought about your liver. Agreed this organ, doesn’t grumble like a hungry stomach, but your liver helps you detoxify your body. ? Located on the right side under the lower rib cage, the liver is actually the biggest gland in our body. It weighs about 1,600 grams (3.5 pounds) and contains millions of cells.

The overindulgence that you have done during Diwali celebrations in the form of heavy fried food has bogged down your liver. Besides, each time you drink alcohol, your liver works overtime to get rid of it. Just because, your liver ain’t complaining, doesn’t mean that you don’t take care of it.

What can you do?

  • Go easy on tea, coffee, sugar, fried foods, aerated drinks and increase your intake of filtered mineral water to make your liver happy.
  • In this time of the year, you get plenty of vegetables, try having homemade warm soups in the evening. And do not add MSG while making soups.
  • Ayurveda says that the toxicity in your body is because of acidic build up. You can get rid of toxicity by making your body alkaline. Vitamin C will help you in this. Sip on warm water spiked with lemon juice througho out the day and your liver is going to love it.
  • Eating plenty of vegetables- carrots and beets in particular- and fruits- apples and lemons- and beans do a great job of supporting the liver.
  • Don’t forget to add plenty of fiber to your diet as well. Fiber helps to prevent constipation. If you’re constipated, some of the toxins in your body can’t be eliminated.
  • How about fasting? If you can skip a meal or two and have freshly extracted vegetable or fruit juices instead, your liver is going to say you a big thank you in the form of increased energy. When the liver is spared from the responsibility to digest food, it becomes involved in ridding the body of toxin build up
  • A good detox regime will greatly benefit the liver. Detox doesn’t mean starvation, in fact, it implies going easy on food and refraining from spicy, oily and packaged stuff.

Milk Thistle

 

  • Herbalists recommend milk thistle to detoxify liver. It contains a bunch of flavonoids. These chemicals are called Silybin, Silydianin and Silychristin; altogether they are Silymarin. Silymarin is an antioxidant that can help cleanse the liver, while aiding in the growth of healthy, new cells. It also helps the liver digest fats. Milk Thistle is such a powerful herb that it’s been used to treat Hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver due to alcoholism.
