Did You Check Your Blood Pressure

Just like dental cleanings it’s important to get your blood pressure checked. High blood pressure is a silent killer. Blood pressure is a measurement of the force applied to the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. The pressure is determined by the force and amount of blood pumped and the size and flexibility of the arteries. Blood pressure is continually changing depending on activity, temperature, diet, emotional state, posture, physical state, and medication use. What do blood pressure numbers indicate? The higher (systolic) number represents the pressure while the heart contracts to pump blood to the body. The lower (diastolic) number represents the

Follicle Stimulating Hormone

In the previous issue, we discussed LH—Lutenizing hormone. Lutenizing hormone works synergistically with FSH, a hormone synthesized and secreted by gonadotropes in pituitary gland in reproduction. In women as the name suggests this hormone is important in the development of follicles (eggs) produced by the ovaries. FSH is also important in the development of sperm. The need FSH is often used in conjunction with other tests in the workup of infertility in both men and women. FSH levels are used to help determine the reason a man has a low sperm count. FSH levels are also useful in the investigation of menstrual irregularities and to aid in the diagnosis of pituitary disorders or

Testosterone Hormone

Testosterone is a steroid hormone, which belongs to the group called androgen. For men, it is the main sex hormone. Men make testosterone in their testes, the male generative gland. Women secrete testosterone from their ovaries. In both men and women, testosterone plays a key role in health and well-being as well as in sexual functioning. Examples include enhanced libido, increased energy, increased production of red blood cells and protection against osteoporosis. On average, an adult human male body produces about forty to sixty times more testosterone than an adult female body. Functions For men, testosterone helps with the maturation of the sex organs including the penis and the

Luetinizing Hormone

LH blood test measures the amount of luteinizing hormone (LH). LH is a protein hormone released by the anterior pituitary gland, pea-sized gland at the base of your brain. The pituitary is the “master control gland” – it makes hormones that affect growth and the functions of other glands in the body. Functions In women, an increase in LH levels at mid-cycle causes ovulation. In men, LH stimulates production of testosterone, male sex hormone. When is the test ordered? LH is often used in conjunction with other tests in the workup of infertility in both men and women. LH levels are also useful in the investigation of menstrual irregularities and to aid in the diagnosis

Progesterone Hormone

Progesterone is a female hormone produced by the ovaries during release of a mature egg from an ovary (ovulation). Progesterone helps prepare the lining of the uterus (endometrium) to receive the egg if it becomes fertilized by a sperm. If the egg is not fertilized, progesterone levels drop and menstrual bleeding begins. During pregnancy, the placenta also produces high levels of progesterone, starting near the end of the first trimester and continuing until the baby is born. Levels of progesterone in a pregnant woman are about 10 times higher than they are in a woman who is not pregnant. Some types of cancer cause abnormal progesterone levels in men and women. When women reach their

Making Sense of Hormonal Profiles

Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers. They travel in your bloodstream to tissues or organs. They work slowly, over time, and affect many different processes, including • Growth and development • Metabolism – how your body gets energy from the foods you eat • Sexual function • Reproduction • Mood The need Hormonal profile is recommended in women if they experience any or all of these symptoms– o Inability to conceive o Skipping of periods without being pregnant. o Irritability, bloating, headaches, breast swelling or mood swings in the week prior to menstruation. o Erratic menstrual cycle Hormones evaluated A hormonal investigation evaluates the

Complete Blood Count

Many number of times your pathological lab technician pricks your arm and draws a syringe of blood to investigate the complete blood count, following the order of your doctor. Yet, we wonder what this test entails and why we need it? The Complete Blood Count is used as a broad screening test to check for such disorders as anaemia, infection, and many other diseases. It is actually a panel of tests that examines different parts of the blood, which means it is more than a haemogram. Facts An adult human has about 4–6 liters of blood circulating in the body. Among other things, blood transports oxygen to various parts of the body. Blood consists of several types of cells floating around

Liver function test

Did you liver is the only organ that can regenerate itself? Located on the right side under the lower rib cage, the liver is actually the biggest gland in our body. It plays a variety of important roles in the body: It stores fuel gleaned from sugars, makes needed proteins, and helps remove poisons and toxins. The liver also makes bile, a substance that helps in digestion. Liver function tests are a group of blood tests that doctors order when they want to find out whether the liver is functioning as it should, and whether there’s been any kind of damage to the liver. These tests can help a doctor diagnose viral infections (like mononucleosis or viral hepatitis) or any sort of liver

Kidney Function Tests

Kidneys are two-bean-shaped organs located in the middle of your back, just below your ribcage. They are about 12 cms long almost the shape of a man’s palm Functions: 1. Kidneys make urine to purify our blood. Along with urine our body discards toxic wastes and excess water. 2. Kidneys help regulate our blood pressure. 3. Kidneys secrete hormone, which controls formulation of RBCs in bone marrow thereby maintaining hemoglobin in the body. If our kidneys function gets impacted our haemoglobin levels too can go down. 4. Healthy functioning of kidneys is crucial to manage the balance between calcium and phosphate. Our blood has both these minerals and their balance is essential for the
