Hands on therapy-chiropractic

Going by statistics pain killers are the most common medicines bought at a pharmacy. Naturally, this implies that pains proliferate in our lives. Alternate cures have chiropractic in its arsenal to eliminate pain. More popular in the West, this therapy is gaining ground in India. Archana Darshan finds more…

Chiropractic is a form of treatment that seeks to eliminate pain—and in some cases, other problems—through the manipulation of the spinal columns. Until now in India acupuncture, acupressure and magnet therapy were preferred alternate modes of pain relief. But, Dr Manoj Garg, Delhi based practicing chiropractor reveals, “More and more people come to me seeking chiropractic treatment to earn relief from pain. And, yes the therapy earns you relief not only from pain, common cold to cancer, all respond to chiropractic treatment” Naturally, this gets me inquisitive and I want to know how busy he is? On an average day, he gets 10 to 20 patients.

A twist in the tale

Talking to Dr. Neena Madan, General Physician, trained emotional counselor who is qualified in meru chikitsa and cranio-sacral balancing gives more insights about this hands-on therapy. She says, “I have been practicing meruchikitsa for almost eight years now. Though I studied medicine I found that Allopathy gives symptomatic relief rather than curing the disease. Hence, I was always keen to try my hands with alternate mediums to give long lasting relief to my patients.”
She informs, “Meru chikitsa has its origins in Vedas and is a specialized form of chiropractic.” “The patients that I get for chiropractic are usually those who come to us as last resort. Mostly they are suffering from cervical and lumbar spondylitis and come to me to find a way to evade surgery. Similarly, I also get to work on the spines and skulls of patients of migraine, hypertension, and insomnia as well,” adds she.

Chirpropractors believe that if the spinal vertebrae are properly aligned, impulses from the brain are able to travel freely along the spinal cord to the various organs, maintaining healthy function through out the body. If a misalignment of the spine occurs, however, the normal impulses are disrupted, resulting in pain as well as other physical disorders. Chiropractors seek to return the spine’s alignment to its normal, healthy state. This permits the nervous system to regain normal function, allowing the body to heal itself and eliminate the pain.

“After the chiropractor locates any spinal misalignments, chiropractic adjustment is used to reestablish normal function. For this chiropractor uses his hands while working on the points of spine in a gentle way, which helps reduce tensions and stress from the spine and skull. Once these windows of ease are opened symptoms of stress disappear on its own,” tells Dr. Madan.

Chiropractic has been found to be helpful for:

  • Back, neck or shoulder pain
  • Discomfort and stiffness in joints and bones
  • Some headaches
  • Sciatica
  • Postural problems
  • Sports and work-induced injuries.

However chiropractic is also a preventative therapy and when used this way can improve health and well-being.
